Modern construction challenges

Although the tunnel was in excellent condition when renovations began, there were a few challenges that required careful planning to ensure the safety and longevity of the tunnel museum.

Slime: The first challenge tackled during modern renovations was the accumulation of slime on the tunnel’s walls. Though the smooth surface of the bricks was an intentional design feature that allowed water to pass over them more efficiently, the accumulated slime made it difficult to inspect the area before construction started.

Wet environment: With 44 roof drains and perimeter catch basins throughout the tunnel, water was constantly weeping through as it made it ways back to the river. To create a dry environment for the museum, water was rerouted through drainage pipes installed beneath the new walkway with 6-inch weeping tile and gravel to allow for drainage. New catch basins were also installed to redirect the water towards the north end of the building and to the sluiceway.
