Tachometer

This tachometer is an instrument used to measure the rotation of the shaft. It displayed the revolutions per minute (RPM) on a calibrated analogue dial, so the operator would know when to use the governor or brakes.

The ideal RPM for the shaft was 250, though it would need to be slowed down to 100RPM to start applying the brakes. Spare tachometers were converted into clocks and given as retirement gifts to employees.
